How to Identify Your Key Blank by Its Code

Nearly every key has a short code stamped on the bow (the big end) or along the blade. That code is the fastest way to find the exact blank you need.

Where to look

Check the bow for a stamp like KW1, SC1, WR5 or Y1, often with a maker’s name (ILCO, Kwikset, Schlage). On older keys the code may be faint — hold it to the light at an angle.

Cross-references

The same physical blank is sold under several codes by different makers. A Kwikset KW1 is also an ILCO 1176, an SC1 is a Schlage blank, and so on. Our listings show these cross-references so you can order whichever code you have.

No code? Send a photo

If there’s no stamp, a clear photo of the bow and blade usually lets us identify it.
