The small keys around your home and building — mailbox, desk, cabinet, filing and padlock keys — use their own families of blanks. Here is how to get the right replacement.
Mailbox keys
Community and Canada Post mailboxes use specific keyways, often stamped with a short code on the key or lock. Because many mailbox locks are keyed to a controlled system, replacements may require a code or authorization from the mailbox provider.
Cabinet, desk and furniture keys
Office furniture and cabinets commonly use a stamped two-to-four character code on the lock face (for example a letter-plus-number). That code lets a shop cut a working key by code even if you have lost every original.
Padlock keys
Padlocks range from basic pin-tumbler blanks to high-security models. Many common padlocks (such as popular brass models) have readily available blanks; others are restricted. Bring the padlock or the key code for the fastest match.
